Thiess commissioned a new Liebherr 9800 excavator at the Peak Downs coal mine in Queensland, Australia, ten days ahead of schedule. The 800-tonne excavator was built on site in five weeks.

BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) added a new Liebherr R 9800 mining excavator to its fleet at Goonyella Riverside coal mine in March 2018. The assembly was completed over 48 days.

BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) will invest about $270 million in an 11km overland conveyor system from Peak Downs Mine to the Caval Ridge CHPP near Moranbah, Queensland. The project is expected to create 400 construction jobs and 200 ongoing operational roles, and will increase Caval Ridge's throughput to 10 million tonnes per year.
