Toshiba, Toshiba Memory, and Western Digital agreed to resolve arbitration and litigation, and strengthen collaboration on flash memory. They will jointly invest in equipment for the Yokkaichi Plant's Fab 6, which is under construction for 3D flash memory production starting in 2018, and discuss Western Digital's participation in a new fab planned in Iwate.
A consortium led by Western Digital is close to an agreement to buy Toshiba's flash memory chip business for $17.4 billion, with an announcement expected on August 31, 2017.
Toshiba is considering spinning off its chip business and selling about 20% (worth 200-300 billion yen) to Western Digital, while retaining majority control.
