Burgo has sold its Duino (Trieste) paper plant to the British group Mondi, with production of coated wood-containing paper continuing through 2023 and Burgo handling sales. The transfer was made official on 15 January 2023.
Mondi agreed to acquire the Duino mill near Trieste, Italy, from Burgo Group for a total consideration of €40 million. Completion is expected in the second half of 2022, subject to competition clearance.
Smurfit Kappa agreed to acquire the Verzuolo recycled containerboard mill in northern Italy from Burgo Group for €360 million, with 600,000 tonnes annual capacity; closing is expected in Q4 2021.
Burgo Group has ordered a Valmet rebuild of paper machine PM 9 and a new OCC line at its Verzuolo mill in Italy, to be completed by end-2019. The deal is valued at EUR 40-60 million and will allow recycled containerboard output of 600,000 tonnes a year.
