Smurfit Kappa signed an agreement to acquire Artemis Ltd., a Bag-in-Box packaging plant in Shumen, Bulgaria, that makes bags, films and caps for food and beverage packaging. The deal expands its presence in Eastern Europe.

Smurfit Kappa completed the takeover of Balkanpack, a Bulgarian corrugated board and packaging manufacturer with a plant in Kazanlak, on 1 March 2019. The deal's value was not disclosed.
