# Liebherr launches R 9600 excavator with preseries trials at BHP and Thiess mines

Liebherr Mining Equipment Colmar SAS launched the R 9600 excavator, successor to the R 996B, in March 2021. Pre-series machines have been operating at BHP's South Flank iron ore mine and Thiess-operated Curragh North coal mine since early 2020, with serial production expected later in 2021.
